Day Four Montreal

Wednesday morning was a cool and rain day with no chance of sunshine. We ate across the street at a little cafe after the suggestion of a staff member at the hotel. A good choice, one of our best meals since we entered Canada.

We recently purchased tickets to do a bus tour while we were in Quebec. The 3 hour bus tour would take us all over Montreal to see many of the sights. It would be much easier and we did not have to deal with the traffic in the rain.

Basilique Notre Dome

Our first stop of the tour was to see Basilique Notre Dome. It has existed in Montreal since the mid 17th Century.

The Sulpician François Dollier de Casson was its architect, and the present-day Notre-Dame Street served as the original site. Its construction, in Baroque style was completed between 1672 and 1683.

Between 1870 and 1900, the second phase of decoration of the church was the work of Curé Victor Rousselot and Victor Bourgeau, Quebec’s most active architect of that era.

On the walk back, passed by the Hotel Place D'Armes. Located in the heart of Old Montreal, it had some really interesting architecture.

Our next stop would be the Montreal Olympic Park where the 1976 Olympics were held. The most impressive feature in the park is the trademark tower. This landmark tower on the main stadium, standing at 575ft, is the world's tallest inclined tower. Adding in the mist from the rain, it would allow for some interesting pictures.

St. Joseph's Oratory
The last stop would be brief at St. Joseph's Oratory. Construction began in 1904 and finished in 1967. As the churches congregation grew, so did the church. The Oratory's dome is the third-largest of its kind in the world.

We would say good bye to Quebec and head back to Ontario. Our next stop is Sturgeon Falls, ON. We would not see rain for two days and get to see some of the great country side that Ontario has to offer.
